Black Gum, also known as Tupelo or Black Tupelo, is a long-lived native hardwood valued for its exceptional wildlife value, brilliant fall color, and adaptability across eastern forests. This species is widely respected by foresters, beekeepers, and native plant growers for its ecological importance. In spring, small greenish-white flowers provide nectar for pollinators, particularly bees. Tupelo honey produced from these blooms is highly prized. Later in the season, the tree produces dark blue fruits that are eaten by birds, deer, and other wildlife. Black Gum grows naturally across the eastern United States and performs well throughout Pennsylvania and the broader Northeast. It thrives in moist soils but is adaptable to a range of conditions once established. This species is an excellent choice for wildlife plantings, native restoration projects, riparian areas, and long-term landscape trees. Mature trees develop strong structure and can live for many decades. Plant Type: Bareroot tree shipped dormant during the planting season.
