Staghorn Sumac seed has a hard seed coat and usually benefits from scarification before cold, moist stratification. Lightly scarify the seed coat, then mix seeds with slightly moist sand, peat, or vermiculite and refrigerate for 30-60 days. Sow shallowly in a well-drained seed-starting mix or nursery bed. Keep evenly moist. Some seeds may germinate over more than one season.
