Black Cherry grows quickly and adapts well to a wide variety of growing conditions. Young trees establish rapidly in full sun and begin producing fruit in as little as 8–10 years under favorable conditions. Its attractive bark, spring flowers, fall color, and wildlife value make it one of the finest native trees for eastern landscapes.
Black Cherry seeds require cold, moist stratification before germination. Remove any remaining fruit pulp. Mix seeds with slightly moist peat moss, sand, or vermiculite. Refrigerate for 90–120 days at 34–40°F. Plant approximately ½ inch deep in spring. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination. Some seeds may naturally germinate over multiple seasons.
