Prairifire Crabapple is a compact ornamental crabapple valued for spring bloom, persistent fruit, disease resistance, and wildlife use. Seed-grown plants can vary from the parent cultivar, which is normal for crabapples grown from seed. Use for wildlife hedgerows, pollinator plantings, homestead landscapes, and small ornamental tree plantings where fruit and spring flowers are desired.
Crabapple seeds usually benefit from 60-90 days of cold, moist stratification before planting. Mix clean seeds with slightly moist sand, peat, or vermiculite and refrigerate, or sow outdoors in fall or winter for natural stratification. Plant about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in a well-drained seed-starting mix or nursery bed. Keep evenly moist and protect young seedlings from drying out, rodents, and deer browsing.
