Carolina Snailseed / Carolina Moonseed Seeds (Cocculus carolinus)

Cocculus carolinus

Carolina Snailseed, also called Carolina Moonseed or Red-berried Moonseed (Cocculus carolinus) is a native perennial vine known for its attractive heart-shaped leaves and clusters of brilliant red fruit that mature in late summer and fall. The vine naturally grows along woodland edges, thickets, fences, and other areas where it can climb surrounding vegetation. Its colorful fruit provides ornamental interest and is eaten by birds and other wildlife. The unusual curved seed inside the fruit gives the plant its common name, snailseed. Carolina Snailseed is a great choice for native wildlife plantings and naturalized areas where a vigorous native vine has room to grow. Each pack contains 25 seeds. Seeds collected and packed by Base Camp North. Note: The fruit is for wildlife and should not be marketed as edible for people. A member of the moonseed family (Menispermaceae), this is a different species from Canada Moonseed (Menispermum canadense). Carolina Snailseed has red ripe fruit and snail-shaped stones; Canada Moonseed has blue-black ripe fruit.

Small-batch seed lots are gathered, cleaned, processed, and packed by Josh at Base Camp North with help from a few friends in Pennsylvania.

Growing notes

Carolina Snailseed is a vigorous woody/perennial climbing vine. Provide a fence, trellis, shrub, or other structure for support. It tolerates a range of growing conditions and can spread once established, so plant it where a climbing native vine is appropriate and where its growth can be managed.

Planting or germination instructions

Carolina Snailseed seeds have dormancy and benefit from cold, moist stratification. Clean remaining fruit pulp from the seeds before storage or planting. Place seeds in a slightly moist medium and refrigerate for approximately 60–90 days, then sow about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Alternatively, seeds can be sown outdoors in fall and allowed to experience natural winter conditions. Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination may be irregular, and some seeds can take longer than one season to emerge.

Milkweed is an important component of monarch habitat because monarch caterpillars feed on milkweed plants.
